Fiona, re the post card of Steuben Park posted today, No. 17 in the main thread, I've never seen that shot. Is that an armory of sorts in the background across the street at the other end of the park? The turrets make me ask.

That's a great question, Dave, and if you look at #13 on the main thread, you will see a picture showing an armory in the background at this location. I was wondering about that, given that the only armory I know of is on Culver Ave.

That's a great question, Dave, and if you look at #13 on the main thread, you will see a picture showing an armory in the background at this location. I was wondering about that, given that the only armory I know of is on Culver Ave. It suddenly occurs to me that it is indeed the original Utica armory at the foot of Steuben St. on the edge of the Park (then called Steuben Square, as were the others that ran in a line up Park Ave. from Chancellor Park.) Here is a better picture and here it is on the 1883 map. I don't know why I forgot that. In fact, I did the annotation of the map some time ago. Age isn't all it's cracked up to be! (That must have been SOME view from the top of the tower! It's much taller than Mrs. Conklin's third floor sewing room window down the street at Rutger Park, which Bobbbiez and Fiona and I looked out from when Fiona found someone to open the house for us one afternoon last spring. THAT view was great, but the Armory Tower would have been an even nicer view of the valley.)

very nice. There is a hideously ugly apt building there now. I don't even know the name of it. Breaks my heart.

Thanks for answering, Dave and Lady Oracle. As I build up the story line and the thread, I will go back several times and explain everything. Right now I am just getting the basis structure of the visual story in place. This process can take several months. Stick with me and you won't be dissapointed.

What the heck, Dave? That's my grandmother!! And, lady Oracle, thank you for the kind words. The story line will change as I develop the theme. What you are seeing now is just the "Story Board."

So ..... how many statues has there been in Steuben Park. Barefoot Boy, Water Nymphs.....what's there now? I don't know if I ever went through there on my bike, or less likely walked through. I must have biked through. There can't be an inch of the city of Utica I didn't bike through. Or over. Of course, I mean as a kid. I never biked in Utica as an adult.

There have been two statues in the park as much as I know. I am still researching it. That's why I didn't put up much info. The Lady nymphs was the first, followed by barefoot Boy around 1907. There is a fountain there now, but the park is just a sad and empty mess. i will post more as I am able to obtain it. thanks

Dave: Can you find and post a pic of the Historical Park Apts on Rutger, B/t Steuben and West Streets, so that we are able to view what is now in the spot where the Armory and the Baptist Church was? I am not good yet with google earth.

Hello. Although this info doesn't belong here, we can delete it later. I am directing everyone to read my post on page 5 of the OGH Commentary regarding my meeting with Ted McQuade. I think you will find it interesting.
