hello. I want to add this info to the trove about John. I went to the Yale Library and the reserch assistants helped me to find all they could. This took about 10 minutes! I realize this is taking a long time, but if we each took a piece of this info and reserched it, John would literally live again. They may also have pictures of him. I could not stay very long, but that is my next tour. I have the info on who to contact.

From the Yale law Biographical record:

John Brandegee Wood was born in Morristown, NJ on June 25th,1844. he prepped at Morris Academy. He was a member of Linonia, Delta Kappa, Alpha Sigma Phi and Alpha Delta Phi, and also of Glyuna. Taking an oration appointment at Junior exhibition, and at Commencement, standing 7th there, he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He roomed at 31 Crown Street. From October 1866 to May 1868, he attended Colombia College Law School, from which he graduated in the spring with the degree of LLB. In November of 1869 he entered a law office in NYC where he continued until March of 1872. he then entered a law office in Morristown, where he was admitted to the bar in June 1874. Is now a member of the law firm Pitney and Youngblood. He married Sarah Miller Aug 20th, 1874 at Utica NY. His health has not been vigerous and his eyes have been troublesome at times.

Since 1891 he has made his home at Riverside, Calif,, where he has purchased an orange grove. he devotes his time to the "cultivation of oranges, ghosts and mathmatics". he has also contributed many articals to various journals on the subjects of, astronomy, philosophy, psychic reserch, polital, geological and literary subjects. During a visit east and while at Utica NY, his wife and only daughter were burned to death in the genesee Apartment House fire of 3/3/1896.

Wow! is right! I was trying to find something you had written about John's later life a moment ago, but couldn't find it on the OGH web pages. It may be on Clipper's.

Anyway, I came across the portrait you wrote of John in the scene where his mother banishes his girl friend, the woman with whom he "dallied" when Sarah turned him down.

It begins at the bottom of page 2 on the web site and extends to page three.

I had been trying to consolidate our info in one place on the website, but it seems too disparate and too large.

yes. it's too much. too spread out. As you know, I am totally tied up in planning for my spring painting show and can't do OGH by myself anymore - at least not now. If you still want to work on this, my idea is too look over the info above and break it down into sections. We can each take a piece, research it, and go on to the next item. I also have a lead on info and mabye - just mabye - some photos of Sarah - I located a cache at Cornell - but I would prefer to do this first (John). I have been sick with a major GI problem for several months and am just getting better. I will be off and on the web today as I paint, so will check back later.

hey! here's some stuff I got a while back: date of death: February 8th, 1936, in Los Angeles, Calif. Services on feb 10th from Pierce Brothers, Los Angeles, calif. I called up Pierce Brothers in LA, (They are still in business) and spoke to a very nice woman who told me that they have there own cemetary and that John is NOT buried there, and that she does not have access to info that old - such as - cause of death, place of death, ect. Interesting in that he lived in a hotel towards the end of his life. Was he intestate?

Hi Fiona,
Many single people finished out their lives in hotels years ago. It was quite convenient to have your meals prepared for you, someone to clean your rooms, possibly help when you were sick, etc. Living and dying in a hotel was not unusual for those who could afford it. Not far from me when I lived in New York State was a hotel that had held many older people doing just that. So much so that it became a senior citizen residence and was taken over by an government agency that administers such places.

Fiona, I am sorry that I cannot participate more in OGH. I, too, have time problems and having just moved, I am at about my limit. I have cut back on my Internet time and am putting my spare keyboard moments into my writing projects. I will, however, continue to provide webspace for OGH while I hope some day to again get more involved.

that's OK Dave. I fully understand. See the note I wrote to Keith on the subject just a little bit ago. I guess the project will have to lie fallow for a while more. There are only so many hours in the day. I have to get this art show underway and the person I am showing with also has a full time job, a band which is like a full time job, and other responsibilities. So...all for now.
