www.windsweptpress.com/images/meter ad.jpg[/img] Jon, what's the date on the ad? Is it before the Central Fire building went up? ('13?) A display ad that large for a business appealing to a wide audience seems unusual for pre-1913 Post Ave.

CITY COURT
Charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct, John, alias "Smoke" Williams was arraigned in City Court yesterday morning. "Smoke is well known on the East Side and Saturday night he acquired a comfortable jag. About 10:30 he wended his way to the store conducted by his father, F. Williams, at the corner of Bleecker and Montgomery streets. He abused his father and finally struck him. Unfortunately for the "smoked up Smoke" his elder brother, Frank happened to be around and took a hand in the game. As a result "Smoke" was punched several times and Frank finally landed his younger brother in a basket full of eggs, putting an end to hostilities for a time. Later another brother, Louis, came around and the fighting was reneged. A large crowd gathered and the scene of battle soon shifted to the street. About 11 o'clock Officer Landers appeared and arrested "Smoke," ending the disturbance.

POLICE BUSINESS
The readers of the Herald will remember that some time ago, the house of C. T. Hewitt, No.34 Washington street, was entered by sneak thieves and the hall rack despoiled of its contents, while Mrs. Hewitt was about at a neighbor's house. Soon after, four hard looking individuals entered "Shad" Jackson's saloon in Post Avenue, having a bundle of clothes with them. They were at once suspected of being the thieves and Officer Charles Clarke has since then been working up a case. He at last learned that some of the thieves were at the Herkimer jail under a ten days' sentence. "Shad Jackson was sent to Herkimer yesterday, when he at once recognized one of the inmates of the jail as one of the fellows who came into his place, with the clothes. The fellow's time was up yesterday and yesterday afternoon Officer Latham went to Herkimer and brought him to this city, where he is now locked up. He gave his name as John Hewitt, his age as nineteen, his home as Philadelphia and his occupation as laborer.

Cross examined Home is in Auburn; had been in Utica six weeks before going to the Mansion House; tended bar for Pell on Post Avenue; was at the Mansion House about two weeks; am not working now; am rusticating, reside on Bleecker street; board with Mr. Batchelor. [Laughter in which the prisoner joined.]
The court here stated that the life of Mr. Williams had been threatened if he did not leave town, and he was placed in the Sheriff's charge for protection.
Witness - I was taken there by the officers of the law; I was afraid of my life and felt I'd rather go there than be blown up; [more laughter by the spectators and prisoner] the officers suggested that I'd be safer there.

The foliage doesn't quite match your photo, but sat pix can be two or more years old. I would have walked by the front of that building on Bleecker St. every afternoon on my way home from high school at UCA. Wish I could remember what was at that exact spot on Bleecker.www.windsweptpress.com/images/post st north.jpg[/img]

Yes, that is the same building. I have to go back and shoot it again, only I want to catch the red on these leaves when they turn. I would say this is the oldest building left. I think it dates from pre -1870's. I think the garage is interesting too - lots of detail when enlarged. I have a few more, which you can see the detail of the old windows on Charlotte Street.
