Hey, guess what I found ...
Olbiston Flats focus of OCHS talk
ONEIDA — The Oneida County Historical Society will host a presentation covering the history of the Genesee Flats and the Olbiston Apartment buildings on Saturday, Sept. 11, starting at 1 p.m.
This is the first Saturday lecture of the society’s fall programming season, and is being presented by longtime Olbiston resident and history enthusiast Fiona O’Downey. A photo, postcard, and newspaper exhibit will accompany her talk, which takes place in the society’s main exhibit gallery at 1608 Genesee Street in Utica.
According to an abstract provided by O’Downey, her talk concerns the fascinating history of the Genesee Flats and the Olbiston Apartments at 1431 Genesee Street, and covers their long presence in the community. Topics include the ‘great fire’ in 1896, the rebuilding of the Olbiston in 1898, and the builders: Owens, Latcher and Blanchard. Following her talk, O’Downey will lead a walking tour of the Olbiston, highlighting its architecture and construction details.
The Oneida County Historical Society is located at 1608 Genesee Street in Utica. Admission is $2. Children ages 5 and under, and current historical society members, are free. All exhibit galleries will remain open during this event.
