I had a new experience this week, an attack of gout. First observation: it's not nearly as much fun as one might think. Second observation: sleep deprivation and pain can have a marked negative effect on one's outlook. Yesterday I spoke harshly to my granddaughter. From the look on her face she was as surprised as I was. Today, thanks to a change in medication my foot and my outlook are much better. For the past few days my reading has wandered into areas different from my normal paths. I did find one tidbit to share with the class. Did you know that LSD can have an anti-inflammatory effect 30 times as powerful as steroiddal anti-inflammatories? www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=psychedelics-may-help-treat-depressionI picture the grant being written by a grey haired man whose forehead extends completely across the top of his head, the rest of his hair gathered into a long pony tail, wearing granny glasses and a tie-dyed lab coat. His geriatric test subjects treat their arthritic knees and hips while listening to Sgt. Peppers played backwards.

"Did you know that LSD can have an anti-inflammatory effect 30 times as powerful as steroiddal anti-inflammatories?" Then there's no question what I'll ask for at the CVS next time I'm in need of an anti-inflammatory. Unless the clerk is a kid, in which case he might reach into the top of his sock and give me an acid-laced tab of paper. I wonder if I'll get all the way home before the car leaves the ground and flies through the heavens and races with a Boston bound 747?
