A change in federal tax laws requires all non-profit organizations to file tax returns. Previously only those earning more than $25,000 needed to file. Approximately 300,000 organizations are listed as having missed the filing deadline and are in danger of losing their non-profit status. A searchable data base of the list can be found here: nccs.urban.org/I did a search of my county. I’ve been treasurer, secretary or presiding officer for several organizations & didn’t want to show up on this sort of IRS list. There are 95 organizations in this county listed as not filing including PTA’s, Little Leagues, youth organizations, senior centers, etc.

When I was treasurer of the Cub Scout pack in pre home computer days, I had enough trouble just keeping track of pop corn sales. Adding IRS forms to the mix would have been over the top.
When I was Girl Scout Cookie Mom (the title went with the job) we were told that the portion of the sale that was a donation to the Girl Scouts was deductible but that the part that was condidered fair market value of the cookies was not. How much are those Thin Mints really worth?

I get a bit riled by my government needing revenue so much that they come after the littlest of little guys, while ignoring the fat cat big guys.
