Home of John, Sarah (Miller) and Mary B.Wood, 83 South Street, Morristown, NJ. This is the historic "Wood Family Farmhouse" , where John was born and where the family lived until 1893. ( This photo was taken from a virtual tour of Morristown NJ and I was unable to enlarge it) This home is now owned by the Morris Town Public Library.

I went googling on the address and couldn't find a better picture. Then I tried StreetView and found this. Google says the street number is 62 but Google is notoriously wrong on street numbers. In both the new and old photos can be seen part of an addition on the first floor on the left hand side of the house. The new StreetView photo shows only the middle dormer left. That was common when new roofs were put on houses that were being converted from residential to other use (why pay for dormer maintenance and roofing?) Where roofing (and the house) was not kept up, deteriorating flashing soon failed and the supporting roof rafters rotted. An economic fix was to just forget the dormers and put on a new roof. www.windsweptpress.com/images/john wood house.jpg[/img]

Excellent Dave and thank you. The info stated it was part of a farm. I wonder if Mary would reckognize it today. The miracle is that it is still standing and extent.

Dave: look at the house directly next door, only the top is still extent, the whole bottom has been subsumed for a store. I have a funny feeling about this house... something happened there... a terrible murder...

I found an absolutley beautiful map of Morristown, 1899, on www.historicmapworks.com but I don't know how to copy it or if it can be copied. Can you take a look at it for me? Thanks.

DAVE:! I swear I am psychic! Go to www.njhallofshame.com and check out the story of Antoine LeBlanc and the murder of the Sayre family. I just googled "old murders in Morristown NJ" and there it was. Read! You won't believe it! I still don't.

I don't know . I just have a funny feeling that this is the way to go. What a bizarre story. They actually made wallets out of his skin after they executed him.

I don't know that. I don't think so. I just think there is some kind of a connection, God only knows. This is just so strange. I wonder if somehow these families were related. I am just thinking about things like curses and how they fly from generation to generation, and energies, how certain negative energies can attach themselves to persons and then manifest. This is part of the lore of Morristown. There is no way that John could have not known about it. Perhaps his parents, freinds, any number of family members even witnessed the hanging. There is a thread, a core of a story here, a back story. I'll see what else I can find and post it.

Fiona, take a look at this. The house on the other thread I found on Google Streetview and assumed was the John Wood house, is the Judge Sayre house, or the Haunted Restaurant of Morristown. Here's the story:cromwellcrew.com/WedgewoodInn.htmlHere's the house I found on Streetview which seemed to be John Wood's. I may be wrong.I should move that portion of the John and Mary Wood thread here, or combine the two into a new thread, "Sayre/Wood house." What do you think?

Here's a center part of the town at the park. Which map were you interested in? Did you want to read it? If so, we can only grab a piece at a time. Click to enlarge, twice with Firefox. www.windsweptpress.com/images/morristown park.jpg[/img]

Just noticed your posts on the other thread. This is confusing. I'm getting lost and am unsure if you've discovered it's the same house or not.
I'm going to move all the Sayre House - Leblanc posts into a new thread. I'll call it Sayre House and Murders.
