I'm no DJ, but I thought I'd share some of the songs I've found on YouTube while searching for selections to include in the posts on Monk In the Cellar. I'll post them mornings when I remember. This is an open thread, so members and non-members may freely comment, as well as post music. Maybe you can widen our experiecne beyond YouTube. Here's some stuff I was looking at this morning (although it's now evening.) Los LobosI love these guys! Los Lobos! Here's the wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_LobosA quote from Wiki: "Their music is influenced by rock and roll, Tex-Mex, country, folk, R&B, blues, brown-eyed soul, and traditional Spanish and Mexican music such as cumbia, boleros and norteƱos." Yeeooww! Here's a favorite. Here's their cover of Richie Valens' greatest hit.

Saturday, February 26 2011 The BandFor no particular reason, I stopped listening to "Top 40" in the early 1960's just as the Beatles were arriving on our shore. I wasn't totally deaf to it, however, since I'd hear the jukebox when I went to kids' bars in my late teens and early twenties. In any case, I really didn't know who was doing what with music in those years. By '69 I was a young father with a young family and the Woodstock Nation meant nothing to me. By "the time I got to Woodstock," five years later, I was working for an international company. Deeply enmeshed in my projects, folks like Bob Dylan and The Band were nowhere on my radar, even though Big Pink is just up the road from my house. (It's still privately owned and tucked back in the woods. The owner reports occasionally looking out his window to see someone has come down the driveway to stare at his house.) But through the magic of the Internet, I get to re-live those days of yesteryear! So I've chosen a few of The Band's appearances I've liked. The first is Robbie Robertson and Eric Clapton doing Further On Up The Road, a great song Clapton later did with Joe Bonamassa of Utica in the Prince Albert Theater in London. In Scorcese's documentary about The Band, The Last Waltz, Robertson says Clapton wanted to join them, but changed his mind and went on to greater fame on his own. Watch Robbie pick it right up in the following when Clapton's strap breaks. Martin Scorcese's The Last Waltz theband.hiof.no/videos/last_waltz.htmland en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_WaltzGoogle YouTube "Last Waltz" for snippets. Wiki entry for The Band: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_BandHere's The Band doing one of my favorites: Here they are with Dylan, Forever Young: Here they are doing The Weight, one of the top 50 R&R songs of all time, according to some survey or another. [youtube] An interview of Levon Helm following his bout with cancer. Today he is reported to be doing well. For more, search YouTube "The Band" or The Band live." And this looks very interesting, a new Album produced with Clapton and Steve Winwood. Coming out in April in 2011. More of a write up at: theband.hiof.no/albums/how_to_become_clairvoyant.html

Sandy LeahSandy Leah Lima (born January 28, 1983) is an Brazilian singer-songwriter, producer and actress. Her parents named her after Sandy, playayed by Olivia Newton John in Grease. Sandy evidently began her music career on television at age six. Here's the Wiki entry: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Leah_LimaI first came across her on Youtube while searching for covers of All Right, OK, You Win. Hers is quite different. I really liked it and immediately sat down to try to combine it with the standard version by Joe Williams or Peggy Lee. Not easy. Give a listen. Ben Summertime Here she is as a young teenager. The Band
The first time I can remember hearing of The Band was a lifetime ago when I spent a term at Michigan State. One of my dormmates went to Detroit for a Dylan concert .
The next day he reported on the crowd reaction after intermission when Dylan brought out his "rock band." It was uniformly negative.
Change can be tough. Their music was always wide ranging. Here is a piece I like.
I've never seen "The Last Waltz." I'll have to track it down.

On the subject of Dylan & remakes:
I know it's short and a commercial, but it's still one of the best recent remakes.

Hey, those are neat! I like the Pepsi Forever Young commerical. I think I prefer Fat Boy's Wipe out to the Ventures, now that I've listened to both. And the Surfari's, huh?

Christina AguileraI can't say I follow pop music, but the name of this woman did sound familiar. I first saw her on Youtube performing in the following video that I used in Monk In The Cellar. It is certainly an unusual choice for a modern day performer. Here's her wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christina_AguileraAnd I certainly will never go through a car wash again without thinking of this video! We'll take a commercial break with this. Here we see Christina in rehearsal. Would that be a Long Island or a New Jersey accent? And for our women readers, here's how to apply makeup to achieve that "eternal sexy teenager" look. Hahaha! Kid RockI've heard him mentioned from time to time, but the dumb name (IMHO) kept me from looking at his music. So yesterday for the first time ... and I can't remember why ... I looked up Kid Rock and found music I could like. (Oh, now I remember. What caught my eye was Bob Seger's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Kid Rock gave the speech.) Here's the wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kid_RockSo here are a few songs. I didn't choose any rap. And I'm sorry for ads that occur. My image of Kid Rock was from Woodstock '99 in Rome (TV only). That made for a very negative impression. These are much better. All Summer Long should probably be added to the beginning of summer medley. Of course will you be able to listen to it without hearing this?
