Unbelievable. Can we ascertain when Latcher's other building burned: ie: The Opera House as well as the Milton Apts? (or any other structures they owned that we don't yet know about?) Ok. Here is what I have: GF: 3/3/1896..... Kanatenah 3/3/1931 .... first fire... and second fire 3/14/1994, no date yet on the Milton or the Opera House.

I think we should start a commentary thread for the Kanatenah and here it is.

I am very intrigued by the dates of these fires. I find it very unusual that they are so synchronous. Ie: Genesee Flats: 3/3/1896, Kanatenah : fire no 1; 3/3/1931. It is no doubt an 'anniversary date" fire. Further research will see if a cause was ever determined. I also want to point out that in the Kanatenah fire of 1931, the blaze presumably started early in the morning in the far south west section of the building on the 7th floor - this would have been Latcher's old apartment. I am not saying I am a detective and want to solve old crimes - there is no need for that - I just find the set and time of events more than highly unusual, given the circumstances. Any comments would be appreciated.

Surprised to see this photo of my grandpa, John Siriani of the Utica Fire Department. Though he has been gone since 1956, I think of him often.

Nosemore, when did he serve? My Dad may have known him. My father was Jack Griffin and served with UFD in the 1940's. He was the tillerman on No.2 out of Central.

Dave, my grandfather, John J. Siriani, served with the Utica Fire Department from 1926 to 1946, when he was forced to take a disability pension due to injuries sustained in the line of duty. He retired as a Captain two years before I was born, and lived until 1956, when he died from cancer. I remember he helped coach Little League for a few years. Whenever I get back to Utica I always make a point to drive by his old house on South Street. So many good memories of growing up in the 50s and 60s in Utica. Take care Pal.
